ELECTED LEADERSHIP

The congregation votes for a Moderator, Vice-Moderator, Church Board Secretary, Financial Secretary, Assistant Financial Secretaries, Treasurer, Assistant Treasurers, Trustees, Elders, and Deacons.

The Trustees

The Trustees hold title to the property of the congregation and act as legal agents for all related matters at the direction of the General Board. In addition to these overall responsibilities, the duties of the trustees shall include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Accept and acknowledge, on behalf of the congregation, bequests  and special large gifts to the church.
  • Develop an overall investment plan for all funds of the congregation,  and review said plan from time to time as necessary, but at least  annually.
  • Invest the funds of the congregation according to the plan in #2 above, and advise the treasurer of the congregation regarding the  details of all investments.
  • Arrange for the purchase of insurance coverage on the church building and its contents, providing property damage and liability coverage, and such other coverages as may be deemed necessary.
  • Review and approve the breakdown of the ministers’ salaries into expense categories.
  • Recommend to the General Board for its approval written policies and fees regarding the use of the church building and equipment by  persons or groups both from within the congregation, and not affiliated with the congregation, and consider the credentials of these persons or groups as they submit applications to use the church  building and equipment.
  • Prepare and submit to the State of Maryland, when necessary, amendments to the Charter of the Corporation.
  • Oversee expenditures of funds for major church maintenance such as:  carpeting, painting, heating, air conditioning, electrical, plumbing, the organ, and concrete upon the request of the Property Commission.

The Deacons

The Diaconate is generally responsible for the maintenance and growth of the congregation through its individual members and corporate life in witness in the community and in the world.  The duties of the Deacons shall include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Serve the Lord’s Supper and receive the tithes and offerings.
  • Provide assistance for the rite of Christian Baptism.
  • Serve on the commissions of the General Board.
  • Assist the Elders in providing opportunities for communion for those unable to attend worship services, and in providing ministry to the confined, sick, bereaved, needy, and distressed members of the congregation.
  • Assist in financial canvasses and visitation projects.
  • Provide for greeters for worship services.
  • Arrange for the distribution of chancel flowers.
  • Recognize and take advantage of opportunities for personal growth in fulfilling the office of Deacon.
  • Perform such duties as may be assigned.

The Elders

It is the responsibility of the Elders to promote the spiritual growth of the congregation.

Our congregation has twelve (12) Elders. They are elected to office for a three year term at the Annual Congregation Dinner Meeting. Each year four Elder’s terms are completed and four (4) new Elders are elected along with the other elected offices of the church.

The Elders are responsible for the prayers for the bread and the cup at the Lord’s Supper, the prayer in the parlor before morning worship, and assisting the minister during the morning worship service.

Elders are responsible for visiting and taking communion to the shut-ins assigned to them from our congregation.

They either chair or serve on one of the functioning commissions of the church and are members of the General Board.
